This course explores how Black artists have used various art forms—literature, visual arts, theater, music, and performance—to challenge systemic racism, advocate for civil rights, and celebrate Black culture and resilience. Students will study key figures and artworks of the Black Arts Movement and #blacklivesmatter, analyze the cultural and political contexts of Black artistic expressions, and explore the intersection of art, activism, and social justice. The curriculum includes discussions on Black aesthetics, identity politics, and cultural critique, as well as critiques of artworks that engage with themes of Black liberation and empowerment.
